Look for HVI rating for quiet fans
One of the deciding factors when purchasing a fan is the level of noise produced by the unit. Many individuals are unaware that there are a number of fan models which operate very quietly. When a fan produces a high level of noise it can interfere with daily activities and become irritating to the point where you may regret purchasing it. Not all fans are noisy, but it is the consumer’s responsibility to recognize which models are noise efficient and which one’s are not.

Fans with a diameter of 12, 24 and 36 inches should have fan blade rotational speeds of less than 1,440, 720, and 480. Ask a professional when purchasing your fan to ensure your fan meets these standards.
When purchasing a fan, look for models that state the fan is quiet, produces low levels of noise, or is noise efficient. These features specify the noise level and if the fan does not perform, you can take it back or exchange the product. It is also a good idea to check for the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) rating. The Home Ventilating Institute is nonprofit organization that tests and rates fans for airflow and sound. If it is not rated then chances are good that the fan will be noisy and irritating. In this case, you might want to keep looking until you find a model which has an HVI rating.
