Ceiling Fan Installation
The 8 basic steps of installation
Installing a ceiling fan can be very difficult and time consuming for individuals who have little knowledge of the subject. The performance of the fan relies on proper installation and balancing, so you want to get it right. Below you will find basic step-by-step instructions for installing your ceiling fan:
- Turn off the power to the existing light fixture's circuit breaker or fuse. Only then should you remove the existing light fixture. Neglecting to do this can lead to a potentially dangerous situation.
- Screw the mounting bracket to the ceiling joist. Make sure your metal junction box can support the weight of your ceiling fan – a well-supported junction box should be able to support a fan weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Secure the blade brackets to the fan housing using the hardware recommended or supplied by the manufacturer. Blade brackets typically require two screws.
- Fasten your blades to your blade brackets using three screws.
- Attach the fan to the mounting bracket.
- Slide the light glass onto the light by turning the light glass tightly until you cannot turn it anymore (this only applies to fans with lights).
- Snap the pull chains onto the fan’s chains.
- Turn on your fan to ensure it runs smoothly. If it wobbles, you will need to balance your fan.
The best way to ensure you are installing your fan correctly is by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Your ceiling fan should come with a detailed installation guide complete with instructions and diagrams to help you install and balance your fan. Each model is different and, therefore, each installation procedure will differ slightly. If you are uncomfortable installing the fan on your own, you can always hire a professional ceiling fan installer. This will cost more, but will require less effort on your part and will ensure your fan is correctly installed.
